Lada VAZ-2101January 4, 2019
In my two years of living here, I am coming to understand that the Czech Republic is a goldmine of old cars scattered all over this country and in varying states of repair.
I don’t mean the cars that Czechs are driving – for the most part they drive decent machines, anything from new up to around fifteen years old.
No. I mean old cars that are simply just lying around, abandoned in supermarket car parks, or even in a field. To give you an idea, here are four such cars I have spotted recently:
And now, while strolling past someone’s garden, I spotted this…
Keeping it company is an equally old Skoda, though I couldn’t quite decipher what model.
While out cruising in my Yeti I have passed quite a few homes that have old motors, old tractors and old cranes and machinery loitering about in their gardens.
And as much as I love to see old cars like this, I cannot help but wonder what the reasoning is behind plonking them down on your lawn and never doing anything with them.
I am no gardener (especially now that I live in a flat) but being English means that to me, planting roses and placing gnomes everywhere means a garden is pretty, and is well cared for.
Maybe these Czechs see things differently?
Maybe to them, a garden ain’t worth glancing sideways at if it hasn’t got a jalopy or two dumped on the grass.
Anyway, the Lada VAZ-1201 was built by the Soviets, between 1970 and 1988.
Apparently, it was practically unchanged throughout its production. And, apparently, it was a gigantic success. At least, in the Soviet Union it was.
I don’t know about you, but as a teenager, I would rather have caught the bus to my girlfriend’s house than pull up in one of these 😮
But I was young, cocky and ignorant.
I am more than relieved that today, the ignorance of youth has been replaced by some wisdom and appreciation.
In short… I would kill to own a Lada 2101 today!
But it will not be this one… the German Shepherd that lives in the house was crystal clear on that score!
If I spot an interesting machine somewhere I get out my mobile phone and take a few photos.
Then I feature it here in ‘Spotted’
And I am always keen to hear about your interesting car, motorbike or scooter.
Would you care to share and help me grow my site?
