Saying Adiós To The Chrome Grille

Saying Adiós To The Chrome Grille

2nd March 2019 3 By Yeti Admin

Chrome doesn’t fit the look I am going for with my Yeti.

Some silver plastic trim parts are fine, like these decorative sill covers I recently fitted. But metal chrome bits are not for me.

Let’s get these two chrome pieces off and to a professional body shop for spraying.

A Torx screw either side to remove…

And four securing grommets.

I get my screwdriver underneath and prise them upwards

They’re good to reuse.

You should place the Torx screws and the grommets somewhere safe. You will lose them otherwise!

Okay, wizard. I’ll do it. Thanks.

Carefully, but with purpose I tug at the grille, towards me, a small section at a time.

I hear healthy sounding ‘clicks’ as each section lets go of the car and comes away

I inspect everything and nothing is damaged.

It’s good times so far. 🙂

Now to remove the chrome piece on the bonnet.

Starting with this Torx screw…

unscrew the Yeti bonnet fixings

There is a securing clip attached to the trim and in several of these holes – I use a 5mm socket to push each one upwards, which releases their grip from the bonnet.

It works well and nothing gets broken. 😷

So now let’s prise this off, a small section at a time.

Now I have to remove the Skoda badge and also the black frame that has the cooling fins on it.

🧙‍♂️ wizard Yetisdorf is typing…
You should do that inside. Otherwise you will rush and break something!

Okay wizard. I will lock the Yeti and finish the work in my flat.

I use a knife from my kitchen – thin and blunt – to prise away each retaining clip on the frame.

The scissors are not for cutting anything.

my yeti grille is off

The badge comes off easily enough. I replaced it last August.

Now I have to get these to the body shop for spraying.

🧙‍♂️ wizard Yetisdorf is typing…
Before you go tearing off down the road you should affix the grille frame back on the car otherwise the radiator has no protection at all from flying debris!

Okay that’s a good point. Thanks!

The body shop is next to the work unit of my trusty mechanic that I use from time to time and that is good news because I might need him to translate English to the sprayer for me – my mechanic speaks good English. Thank God!

I still haven’t bothered to learn Czech. 🙄

My requirement is to turn these chrome trim pieces into a long lasting, durable matt black finish.

They must withstand a monthly jet wash 💪

She doesn’t look pretty but I have to drive her. And the Wizard is right, the radiator would be too vulnerable without the grille frame in.

Right, I’m off to the sprayer…

Nine days later and my grille parts are back

He charged me 2000 CZK (about £67).

I reverse everything I did previously, and…

BOOM!

Good times. 🙂

And I am always interested to hear about your Yeti, whether customised or not.
